Residence permit for temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine - Extension

People who have had to flee Ukraine due to the war were given temporary protection according to § 24 of the German Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) as a humanitarian residence permit. The basis of these residence permits is the Council Implementing Decision (EU) pursuant to Directive 2001/55/EC. This will expire on March 04, 2024. Currently it is not clear whether this decision will be extended. It is also possible that your residence permit will be extended simply and without requiring an appointment with the Immigration Office based on an ordinance from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. The LEA will inform you as soon as it is clear what the future legal regulations will be.

If you have this type of residence permit, you can request an extension online. Your residence permit then remains valid until further notice even if the expiry date passes.

Procedure
1. Complete and submit the online request form “Extend residence permit for temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine”.
  • You will receive a PDF document as a confirmation that you have submitted your request. This confirms that your residence permit remains valid in Germany beyond the expiry date. Your work permit also remains valid.
  • Please save this document and also print it if possible.
2. Once you have submitted your online request, you will receive information before March 04, 2024, on the further process. Due to the very large number of refugees from Ukraine, it will take some time before you receive the information.
  • Either your residence permit will be automatically extended
  • or you will be given an appointment to appear at the LEA.
3. If you are given an appointment, please bring all required documents to the appointment with you.

Prerequisites

  • You have a residence permit according to § 24 AufenthG for temporary protection
  • Main residence in Berlin
If the residence permit was issued by another immigration office and if this includes the condition that your residence is to be in the area of another immigration office, then you will need to request the extension from that other immigration office.
  • If applicable, an appointment at the LEA
Once you have submitted the online request for the extension of your residence permit, if necessary you will receive an appointment by email to come to the LEA. It is not possible to come to the LEA without an appointment.

Average time to process request
