Applying for calibration of measuring devices for taxis and hire cars

If you would like to have the taximeter of your taxi or the odometer in your hire car calibrated, you must submit a corresponding calibration application to the Berlin-Brandenburg State Office for Metrology and Verification.

To ensure that the passenger can trust the fare determined by the taximeter or the odometer, the competent calibration authority checks the correct functioning of the taximeter in all taxis every year. The odometers in hire cars are checked every two years. This is required by law due to the calibration obligation of these devices.

In addition, a taximeter or odometer must always be calibrated after

reprogramming or distance pulse adjustment of an installed, already conformity-assessed or calibrated measuring device or
after repair / maintenance of an installed, already conformity-assessed or calibrated measuring device or
after replacement of a measuring device in existing taxis or hire cars without a change in vehicle use (taxi remains taxi or hire car remains hire car).

The measuring devices are calibrated on a roller test bench or a measuring track. The method of metrological testing is determined by the calibration authority.

For the calibration and subsequent use of taximeters and odometers, it is necessary that the vehicle is equipped with the tyres permitted for this vehicle. The taximeter must contain the currently valid tariff for the licensed tariff area.

Procedure:
1. Submit an application for calibration of the taximeter or odometer for your taxi or hire car to the Berlin-Brandenburg State Office for Metrology and Calibration (Berlin site). You can do this online.

The application for calibration (calibration application) is made together with a binding appointment booking in the online appointment allocation procedure.
Please note that only measuring devices from local persons or companies are calibrated at the above locations.
Only one measuring device (taximeter or odometer) can be tested per appointment.

Please note:

If the binding appointment booking (incl. calibration application) was made at least ten weeks before the end of the calibration period (end of the year), we authorise you to continue using the calibrated taximeter (or the calibrated odometer) beyond the end of the original calibration period until the booked calibration date. This authorisation is free of charge if the calibration application is submitted in good time.
If the binding appointment booking (incl. calibration application) was made within the last 10 weeks of the calibration period (end of the year) and the booked calibration date is not until the following year, an application for authorisation to continue using the taximeter or odometer until the booked calibration date was automatically submitted with the appointment booking. We thus authorise you to continue using the taximeter or odometer until the booked final date. This authorisation is a chargeable service. A fee is charged for this in accordance with the current Ordinance on Measurement and Calibration Fees (MessEGebV). You will be charged this fee at the next calibration. You can object to this procedure. Please send your objection in writing to the State Office of Metrology and Verification within one month of submitting your calibration application.

2. As the user of a measuring device, you are obliged to have the taxi or hire car presented for calibration by a suitable driver in an operational and roadworthy condition.

3. If the calibration test is successful, the application of the calibration mark indicates that the meter may be used for a further calibration period.

Prerequisites

Measuring devices in taxis and hire cars can only be calibrated if they meet the essential requirements of the Measurement and Calibration Ordinance.
The measuring device must fulfil at least one of the following conditions
- Type approval of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
- For EC type approval: Type approval from a European approval authority
- Conformity assessment according to national regulations, European Measuring Instruments Directive

Fees

The fees charged for the calibration of meters in taxis and hire cars are regulated nationwide and depend on the type of meter in question.
