Residency to start a job as an au pair

Issuance of a residence permit to start a job as an au pair for the maximum of one year.


  • Age between 18 and 26 years
    Applicants must not be older than 26 years.
  • Have a basic knowledge of the German language
  • Have not previously worked as an au pair in Germany
  • German as a native language in the host family
    An au pair employment may be authorized if German is spoken as mother tongue in the host family .
    Otherwise it is only possible when the employee does not come from the same country as the host parents.
  • Main residence in Berlin
  • A personal interview is required
    The interview should take place together with the host parents and, if possible, by appointment.

Documents required

  • Valid passport
  • 1 current biometric photo

  • au pair contract with the host family
  • the form “Antrag auf Erlaubnis einer Beschäftigung" - Application for a employment permit (not self-employed) which requires the approval of the Federal Employment Agency
    To be filled out by the au pair.
  • the form Stellenbeschreibung (Job description form; only in German language)
    To be filled out by the host family.
  • the form "Fragebogen Au-pair" (only in German language)

  • Health insurance
    Proof of a secure livelihood must also include sufficient health insurance. Those with statutory health insurance are sufficiently insured.   • 56.00 to 100.00 euros (depending on the technical effort)
  • Free of charge for Turkish citizens

Average time to process request

To ensure timely renewal of your current visa or residence permit an appointment should be made 4-6 weeks before the expiry date.
The residence permit will generally be issued as an adhesive label in your passport. Electronic residence permits can at the moment only be issued in exceptional circumstances.
